For adoptions, in addition to the adoption contract, we request
a nominal adoption fee to cover veterinary and other expenses
incurred on behalf of the rescue animal. Our standard adoption
fee is $300. We reserve the right to increase this fee for high
demand or rare dogs in an attempt to narrow down the field of
potential adopters to those who seriously want such a dog and
are not simply looking for a "bargain." Although this may sound
harsh, we can promise you that we have had such inquiries
about our dogs. On a more pleasant and heart warming note,
the small additional fee that is received on these high demand
dogs will be used to help pay for some of the non-routine vet
work that is often required for our older dogs (for example, teeth
cleaning, blood-work, tumor removal, x-rays, and a multitude of
other possible veterinary services). Since we get a large
number of older dogs, as compared to the occasional young,
high demand dog, this will not, of course, totally cover these
additional expenses - but will at least help a little. We want to
do everything we can to continue to save the older dogs and
those that need medical attention, and unfortunately, funds are
required to do this. We also want to try our hardest to do what
we can to increase an older dog's chances of finding a loving,
forever home. As a result, we will never RAISE an adoption fee
for a dog just because it has required extensive vet work. Upon
occasion we will even reduce our adoption fee for a hard to
place or very old dog. We hope that by doing this that we can
get someone to "take a chance" on one of these sweet, older
guys, that still have a lot of love to give! Please note that any
deviation from our normal adoption fee will be clearly stated in
the description for a particular dog, so unless otherwise stated
the adoption fee is the standard fee is $300.
About the Puppy Mill Dogs
|
SBRKY has a special place in the hearts of its members for the
Puppy Mill Dog. In order to bring these dogs out into freedom
we have to "buy them out". This means that we must purchase
them much the same way as we pay a "pull fee" or "adopt" a
dog who is found in a non rescue friendly shelter. This makes
the cost of rescuing these dogs higher than say, an owner
surrender. Even with the additional expense that comes with
these wonderful dogs which are the pure breeds, we charge the
same fee or even less for the special needs or senior puppy mill
dog. These dogs have had no veterinary care before we get
them and therefore have a great deal more care needed than
dogs that have been surrendered or come from other
circumstances. They come with mammary tumors, hernias that
have never been repaired, teeth that are rotten and falling out
and all the infections and diseases that come with this
condition. They come with skin infections and congenital
problems and untreated injuries that require special care. We
get the needed veterinary care and medicines for these dogs.
Please remember the fees for these dogs is the same or even
lower in a special needs case than our regular adoption
donation fee.
Special Adoption Fees for Puppies
|
It is extremely rare but from time to time a puppy mill dog may
come into rescue and she will be pregnant. This is when we
have puppies on our site and available for adoption. These
puppies are healthy and never know the agony of the cages
that their parents knew. They are socialized and kept with their
mothers longer and in homes so that they are exceptional
puppies when they are placed. They are fully vetted as far as
their age will allow. These puppies also come with a special
adoption fee to help with some of the expenses that the senior
or special needs dogs bring us. Example: One of the mill dogs
came into rescue pregnant and was also a senior. Can you
imagine someone breeding an 11 1/2 year old dog? She had
three puppies and had a C-Section. The costs for this one
pregnancy, surgery and illness caused by the weakened
condition of the mother cost us a total of over $600. This one
dog alone who will go to her retirement home with a fee of about
$150. So we have set the puppies a special fee of $500 with a
spay neuter contract. Once we have proof of the spay/neuter
there will be a $50 refund. The adoption is not final until the fee
is paid and the puppy is spay/neutered. They will still be
SBRKY property until this is done.
